Nissan Rogue (T33) 2021-Present Owner’s Manual & User Guide: Hands on detection

Basic information

When Steering Assist is activated, the vehicle monitors the driver's steering wheel operation using capacitive and torque sensors in the steering wheel. When ProPILOT Assist is operating in hands-on (green) mode and the steering wheel is not operated, or the driver removes their hands from the wheel for a period of time, the warning 1 appears and the hands-off warning light 2 illuminates. See "Warning and Emergency Stop" for the escalating warnings if the system does not detect the driver’s hands on the wheel.

For vehicles equipped with ProPILOT Assist 2.1, hands-on recognition may be required (and detected) when Lane Change Assist or Passing Assist is operating or being activated, even if the ProPILOT Assist 2.1 mode indicator is blue.

NOTE:

• The system may not detect the driver’s hand(s) on the steering wheel in the following conditions:
  • When the driver is wearing gloves.
  • When a steering wheel cover is installed.
  • When the driver grips only the seam of the leather or the spokes on the steering wheel.
  • If the system does not detect hands by touch alone, it is recommended to apply slight steering torque.

Warning and Emergency Stop

In Hands On (green) mode, the vehicle uses capacitive and torque sensors in the steering wheel to confirm that the driver has their hands on the wheel. It remains the driver’s responsibility to keep hands on the steering wheel to avoid the escalating alerts and ensure safe control of the Nissan Rogue.

Steering Assist temporary standby

Automatic standby due to driving operation (for ProPILOT Assist and ProPILOT Assist 1.1):

When the driver activates a turn signal, Steering Assist is temporarily placed in standby mode. Steering Assist will resume automatically when the operating conditions are met again.

Automatic standby:

In the following situations, a double chime sounds and Steering Assist is placed into temporary standby. Steering Assist will restart automatically when the operating conditions are once again satisfied:

• When the current traveling lane is too narrow for system operation.
• When a curve is too sharp and the vehicle cannot remain in the lane.
• When lane markers on both sides are no longer detected.
• When a vehicle ahead is no longer detected below approximately 37 MPH (60 km/h).
• When strong light enters the camera unit (for example, direct sunlight at sunrise or sunset).
• When the temperature of the camera becomes too high.

NOTE:

For ProPILOT Assist 1.1 or 2.1 equipped vehicles on a limited-access freeway identified in the Map locator system, Steering Assist may continue to operate with visible lane markers on both sides, even when the Nissan Rogue is traveling below approximately 37 MPH (60 km/h) and a vehicle is not detected ahead.

Steering Assist cancel

Under the following conditions, Steering Assist is canceled, a chime sounds twice, a warning message appears, and both the Steering Assist status indicator and Steering Assist indicator turn off:

• When unusual lane markers are present in the traveling lane, or lane markers cannot be correctly detected for an extended period due to conditions such as snow ruts, reflections on wet roads, or multiple unclear lane markings.
• When the windshield wipers operate at high speed (Steering Assist is disabled when the wipers operate in high speed for more than approximately 10 seconds).

Action to take:

When the above conditions are no longer present, turn Steering Assist back on using the Steering Assist switch.

Steering Assist malfunction

If the system malfunctions, it turns off automatically and the "Malfunction See Owner's Manual" warning message appears in the vehicle information display.

The Steering Assist status warning (orange) will illuminate, and a chime may sound depending on the situation.

Action to take:

Stop the vehicle in a safe location, press the park button to shift to the P (Park) position, turn the engine off, restart the engine, resume driving and set the ICC system again. If the warning (orange) continues to illuminate, Stee
