Nissan Rogue (T33) 2021-Present Owner’s Manual & User Guide: Fuel information

Basic information

Use unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 91), as recommended for your Nissan Rogue.

CAUTION

Gasoline specifications

NISSAN recommends gasoline meeting World-Wide Fuel Charter (WWFC) specifications wherever available for optimal Nissan Rogue performance and emission control.

Reformulated gasoline

Some suppliers offer reformulated gasoline designed to lower emissions. NISSAN supports these environmental efforts and encourages using reformulated fuel when available.

Gasoline containing oxygenates

Many fuels contain oxygenates such as ethanol, MTBE, or methanol. NISSAN does not recommend using fuels when oxygenate content and compatibility with the Nissan Rogue cannot be determined.

If uncertain, ask your service station manager.

If oxygenate-blend fuel is used, observe these precautions as it may impact performance or fuel system components:

If driveability issues such as stalling or difficult hot-starting occur after using oxygenated fuel, switch to non-oxygenated or low-MTBE fuel immediately.

Take care not to spill gasoline during refueling, as oxygenated fuels can damage paint.

E-15 fuel

E-15 contains approximately 15% ethanol and 85% unleaded gasoline. It may only be used in vehicles specifically designed for E-15; the Nissan Rogue is not designed for E-15.

E-85 fuel

E-85 contains about 85% ethanol. It is intended solely for Flexible Fuel Vehicles (FFVs). Do not use E-85 in the Nissan Rogue.

Fuel containing MMT

MMT is an octane booster. NISSAN advises against using MMT-containing fuel as it may reduce Nissan Rogue performance and impact emissions systems.

Aftermarket fuel additives

NISSAN does not recommend aftermarket additives such as injector cleaners or octane boosters, as many contain solvents that may harm the Nissan Rogue’s fuel system or engine.

Octane rating tips

Using gasoline with a lower-than-recommended octane rating may cause persistent or heavy spark knock.

(Spark knock is a metallic rapping noise.) If severe, it can lead to engine damage over time. If you detect a persistent or heavy spark knock even while using gasoline with the recommended octane rating, or if you hear continuous knock while maintaining a steady speed on level roads, it is recommended to have a NISSAN dealer inspect the condition. Leaving this unresolved may be considered misuse of the vehicle, and NISSAN cannot be held responsible. This guidance applies fully to vehicles such as the Nissan Rogue.

Incorrect ignition timing can cause spark knock, after-run, or overheating, which may result in excessive fuel consumption or even engine damage. If any of these symptoms occur, have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible. It is recommended that your Nissan Rogue be serviced by a NISSAN dealer for accurate diagnosis and repair.

Occasionally, you may notice light spark knock for a short period while accelerating or climbing hills. This is generally not a concern, as the engine can deliver the best fuel efficiency when a brief, light spark knock occurs under heavy load conditions. Nissan Rogue drivers may experience this from time to time during normal operation.
