Nissan Rogue (T33) 2021-Present Owner’s Manual & User Guide: AEB with Pedestrian Detection system limitations

WARNING

The following limitations apply to the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system. Not following these instructions while driving your Nissan Rogue can lead to serious injury or death.

• The AEB with Pedestrian Detection system cannot detect all vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists in every situation.
• The system does not detect:
  • Small pedestrians (such as children), seated individuals, toy users, scooter riders, wheelchair users, or anyone not standing upright.
  • Animals of any size.
  • Roadway obstacles such as cargo or debris.
  • Crossing vehicles.
  • Vehicles with low visibility rear profiles or hard-to-see tires.
  • Parked vehicles.
• The AEB with Pedestrian Detection system has performance limitations:
  • If a stationary vehicle is ahead, the system will not activate if your Nissan Rogue approaches it at speeds above ~50 MPH (80 km/h).
  • Pedestrian and cyclist detection will not work above ~50 MPH (80 km/h) or below ~6 MPH (10 km/h).
• The system may not detect hazards properly under the following conditions:
  • Poor visibility (rain, fog, snow, dust, sand, smoke, road spray).
  • Radar or camera blocked by dirt, ice, snow, fog, stickers or damage.
  • Strong light entering the camera (sun glare, headlights, sudden brightness changes such as entering tunnels).
  • Low-light or nighttime conditions where headlights or tail lights are not clearly visible.
  • Camera misalignment.
  • Driving on steep slopes, sharp curves, bumpy terrain or dirt roads.
  • Interference from other radars.
  • Sudden vehicle movement (quick lane changes, rapid steering, abrupt acceleration or braking).
  • Fast-moving traffic participants where the system cannot react in time.
  • Objects offset from the Rogue’s forward path.
  • Small speed difference between your Nissan Rogue and the vehicle ahead.
  • Pedestrians carrying bags, pushing strollers, wearing bulky clothing, or in unusual postures.
  • Poor contrast between pedestrian and background.
  • Immediately after engine start (first ~15 seconds).
  • Unusual vehicle shapes or narrow profiles (e.g., motorcycles).
  • Reflections, shadows, or water on the road.
  • Groups of pedestrians or cyclists.
  • Pedestrians obscured by vehicles or objects.
  • Towing a trailer or another vehicle.
• System performance may degrade when:
  • The Nissan Rogue is driven on slippery surfaces.
  • The vehicle is on a slope.
  • Heavy cargo is loaded in the rear seat or cargo area.
• The system checks radar and camera functionality automatically but may not detect some obstructions (snow, ice, stickers). Regular cleaning is essential.
• In certain situations, the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system may apply partial braking unexpectedly. Press the accelerator to override.
• The system may react to shapes, shadows, lights or objects similar in size to vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians.
• The system may continue operating when the vehicle ahead turns left or right.
• The system may activate while approaching or passing another vehicle.
• Depending on road geometry (curves, construction, lane regulation), temporary detection of oncoming vehicles may occur.

WARNING

• The AEB with Pedestrian Detection system on the Nissan Rogue may react to various roadside elements, including:
  • traffic signs, guardrails, pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, or other vehicles near the roadway;
  • pedestrians or cyclists appearing from narrow alleys;
  • people or cyclists who temporarily enter the driving lane to avoid obstacles on the shoulder;
  • objects positioned above the road, such as low bridges or overhead signs;
  • items on the road surface including railroad tracks, grates, or steel plates;
  • structures inside parking garages such as beams or pillars;
  • pedestrians, cyclists, or motorcycles approaching the Nissan Rogue’s traveling lane;
  • vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, or objects in adjacent lanes;
  • approaching pedestrians or cyclists;
  • roadside objects such as trees.
• Braking distances increase on slippery road surfaces.
• Loud ambient noise may interfere with the audible chime, making it difficult to hear warnings.

WARNING

• Intersection Assist does not apply braking to approaching vehicles directly in front of your Nissan Rogue.

WARNING

In addition to the general limitations of the AEB with Pedestrian Detection system, the following limitations apply while Intersection Assist is active:

• Intersection Assist may not detect an approaching vehicle or pedestrian under these conditions:
  • When your Nissan Rogue is in a lane more than two lanes away from approaching traffic during a turn;
  • When the vehicle is not pointed directly toward an oncoming vehicle during the turn;
  • When the system attempts detection after the turn has already begun;
  • When making a sharp turn or navigating a wide curve;
  • When the system cannot recognize the center line;
  • When multiple approaching vehicles are following each other closely;
  • When lane width is unusually wide or narrow;
  • When the center line is positioned close to road markings.
• Intersection Assist may apply braking during a turn even if the risk of collision is low.
• The system may also brake when the motion of approaching vehicles is unpredictable (for example, sudden turning or quick deceleration).

On certain roads — such as winding, hilly, curved, narrow routes, or construction zones — the sensor of the Nissan Rogue may detect vehicles in other lanes or fail to detect a vehicle directly ahead. This may cause unexpected system reactions.

The system’s detection accuracy can also be influenced by your driving inputs or vehicle conditions. In such cases, the Nissan Rogue may flash the system indicator or sound a chime unexpectedly, requiring the driver to re-establish a safe following distance manually.
